Over the centuries, Christians from all cultures and walks of life have responded with generosity to Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations. Here in The Scripture of Their Lives, readers will find vignettes of twenty-two Episcopal missionaries who have helped spread the gospel around the globe.
The story of each missionary illustrates one of the principles of emerging mission theology, as outlined by the Episcopal Church. Not only do they show the challenging and important work of mission, but they illustrate imperatives found in Holy Scripture. Each story is introduced with a familiar narrative passage from the Bible.
Also featured in The Scripture of Their Lives is a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Jane Butterfield was an appointed missionary in Zimbabwe for three years and the Episcopal Church's Mission Personnel Officer for seven years. A graduate of Boston University and Episcopal Divinity School, she has served congregations in Massachusetts. Currently ministering as a parish priest in the Diocese of New York, she is married to Titus Presler, sub-dean and mission professor at the General Theological Seminary. Jane and Titus have four grown children.
"A treasury of resources for missions. This is a very worthwhile volume and needs our attention."
—The Living Church, September 2006
"The Missionaries' stories are interesting, even intriguing, calling us to sympathy, prayer and thanksgiving for their ministries. Read this book and learn how it is to be a missionary today."
—Episcopal Life, May 2007
