The first of an exciting new series, Conversations in Global Anglican Theology: Faith explores the impact of questions of faith across the Anglican Communion.
Featuring contributions by a diverse group of theologians from the North and South, including Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Paul Ueti, and Simon Ro Chul Lai, the Conversations in Global Anglican Theology series addresses the most pressing questions facing the churches of the Anglican Communion. From classical issues such as the imagio dei and atonement theology to contemporary challenges such as interfaith relations and the interaction of church and state, the series features thought-provoking essays by established and emerging scholars.
Edited by Michael Battle, a leading Anglican thought leader, the first volume in the series, Conversations in Global Anglican Theology: Faith, features the voices of non-Western thinkers, long silenced in mainstream Anglican discourse, including Archbishop Thabo Makgoba and Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkin. Each contributor brings a unique perspective to the question of faith, but all confront this central dilemma: How can we enable authentic conversations around the practice of faith in a global context in which many theologians and spiritual leaders in the Global South are often relegated to working in a ministry or a social justice context? How can contemplation and reflection nurture social action?
Conversations in Global Anglican Theology: Faith is a paradigm shifting contribution.
Michael Battle is the Extraordinary Professor at the Desmond Tutu Centre for Religion and Social Justice, the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, and formerly taught at General Theological Seminary in New York where he was the Herbert Thompson Professor of Church and Society and Director of the Desmond Tutu Center. Battle has published nine books, including Reconciliation: the Ubuntu Theology of Desmond Tutu, and Ubuntu: I in You and You in Me. He lives in Knightdale, North Carolina.
“A book like this is itself an act of faith.”—from the Foreword by Rowan Williams
“This volume is a vibrant and unexpected convocation of voices from three continents and multiple cultures in which Anglicanism is indigenized. It is essential reading for my Anglican students, helpful for anyone who wishes to comprehend the beautiful and challenging variety of contemporary Anglican faith.”—Ellen F. Davis, Amos Ragan Kearns Distinguished Professor of Bible and Practical Theology, Duke Divinity School
“This important book and series promises not just to challenge western dominance in Anglican theological discourse in theory, but to model alternative ways of doing theology centered in the Global South in practice. Its specific and deep (but not exclusive) connection with South Africa makes this more than an abstraction, and uses the inspiring and liberative experience of that place and the Church there as a concrete example of how Anglican theology, and the core notion of Communion itself, may be renewed.”—Andrew McGowan, Dean and President, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale
